Soufriere in the south is the oldest settlement on the island, having served as the French capital in the 18th century. The deep water port stands at the base of St Lucia’s main landmarks, the two towering extinct volcanoes known as the Pitons rising to 2,619 feet (798m) above sea level. The town itself is pretty, with a cluster of colourfully painted arcaded buildings against a background of dense jungle.

Most visitors, however, are drawn by the nearby attraction of the ‘drive-in’ volcano, Mount Soufriere, where it is possible to enter by car into an ancient volcanic crater filled with sulphur springs and steam geysers. Also at Soufriere are the Diamond Mineral Baths, the Diamond Waterfall and the Diamond Botanical Gardens.

The tour to Soufriere takes you through the fishing village of Anse La Raye, which has become very popular for its Seafood Fridays.

Canaries is the smallest village and lies a mere 8 miles from Soufriere.

The Majestic Pitons beckon you onward. Located near Soufriere, these primeval twin peaks, topping 2,000 feet, are St. Lucia’s most famous landmark. Only the most daring climbers have ventured an ascent to their summits, but they can be seen in all their glory from the decks of a boat offshore.

This is a view of the Pitons as you approach Soufriere.

Soufriere Town: Located in the southwestern part of the island, it is the oldest town in St. Lucia, established by the French in 1746. Of particular interest to the tourists is its unusual marketplace, decorated with colourful murals and gingerbread trim.

A small roadside food market greets you right next to the Soufriere waterfront.

Sulphur Springs: Now dormant, it is the world’s only drive-in volcano. A tour of its bubbly, steamy sulphur springs offers a direct and fascinating lesson in the violent geology of the Caribbean Rim.

Diamond FallsAs part of the Soufrière Estate, the Diamond Falls offer beautiful gardens, an amazing waterfall colored by mineral deposits, and healing mineral hot spring baths which were originally built for the troops of King Louis the XVI of France. Within the gardens visitors will find educational displays of local fruits & vegetables and also planted amongst them are coconut, cocoa, mahogany, and red cedar trees with tropical flowers and shrubs from around the world.

For a small entrance fee, visitors can also use the soothing outside pools or private bathhouses.
